Some of you signed up weeks ago and never heard a word back. That was a bug on my end - the form was adding people to the list without sending them anything. Fixed today. Sorry.

The Michigan pack is still being written. I’m not going to give you a date I’ll miss. What I will do is tell you what’s in it and what it costs the day it’s ready, and if it costs nothing I’ll say that too.

Since you’ve been waiting, the short version of what this is built on:

Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety told me their Flock search logs were “not held in the regular course of business” and that they weren’t obligated to create a new record. I appealed the same night. Two weeks later 116,017 searches showed up, every column populated, in monthly files that had obviously been sitting on a server the whole time.

74,448 of those searches were run by the Michigan State Police, on cameras Kalamazoo paid for. Three times what Kalamazoo’s own department ran. A median of 1,185 camera networks touched per query. One search logged for a littering complaint.

The pack is the paperwork that pried that loose, cleaned up so you can send it to your own town.

Two things you can do right now.

Check the state you picked on that form. It’s how I decide what gets built after Michigan, and if you picked wrong it’s a wasted vote. Hit reply and tell me.

And if a request in your state comes back with a fee, I want to be able to cover it. Kalamazoo charged me nothing. One agency quoted me hundreds. You can cover one here
